John Cena made his first debut in the WWF on the October 10, 2000, episode of SmackDown. At that time, Cena appeared under the name "The Prototype."

Cena officially signed with SmackDown in 2002. Immediately upon signing, he made his official debut by answering Kurt Angle’s Open Challenge. A match was set between Kurt Angle and John Cena; it was a fantastic fight considering it was his debut, but he ultimately lost. John Cena’s first Royal Rumble was in 2003, where he was eliminated by The Undertaker.

In 2004, Cena was again unable to win the Royal Rumble because he was eliminated at the hands of the Big Show. In this manner, by winning and losing various matches, he continued to make a name for himself in the WWE. That same year, at WrestleMania XX, he got a shot at the WWE United States Championship, which was held by the Big Show. Cena won, marking his first-ever championship in the WWE.

On July 8, 2004, John Cena had a match against Booker T. At that time, the General Manager of SmackDown was Kurt Angle. During the match, Cena accidentally pushed Kurt Angle, causing him to fall. In a fit of rage, Angle declared the match a draw and stripped Cena of the U.S. Title. Following this, a "Best of Five" series took place between Booker T and John Cena. Cena won the series and reclaimed his title. However, on the October 7, 2004, episode of SmackDown, he lost the U.S. Title to Carlito, only to win it back once more on November 18, 2004.

Then came the 2005 Royal Rumble, where John Cena ended up as the runner-up, being the last person eliminated (at number 29) by Batista.

On February 20, at No Way Out 2005, Cena fought Kurt Angle in a Number One Contender’s match for the WWE Championship. The title match was set to take place at WrestleMania 21 on April 3. Since the WWE Champion at the time was John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL), a rivalry with JBL began.

On the March 3, 2005, episode of SmackDown, Cena lost his U.S. Title to Orlando Jordan. However, on April 3, 2005, at WrestleMania, he defeated JBL to win his first WWE Championship.

During the 2005 WWE Draft on June 6, John Cena was transferred to RAW. The following year, on January 8, 2006, he lost his WWE Championship to Edge. Cena had just successfully defended his title in an Elimination Chamber match and was in terrible physical condition; Edge took advantage of the moment to cash in his Money in the Bank contract.

John Cena won the WWE Championship back from Edge at the 2006 Royal Rumble and held it until WrestleMania 22, where he competed in his first major WrestleMania main event against Triple H.

On June 11, at ECW One Night Stand, Rob Van Dam took the title from Cena. Later that year, on September 17, a match was set against Edge for the WWE Championship. Cena defeated Edge to become the owner of the WWE title once again, and at the very next event, he introduced the "Spinner" WWE belt. From his debut until 2025, he has won numerous WWE titles; the details of which are listed below:

  • World Heavyweight Championship (3 times)
  • World Tag Team Championship (2 times)
  • WWE Championship[d] (14 times)
  • WWE Intercontinental Championship (1 time)
  • WWE Tag Team Championship (2 times)
  • WWE United States Championship (5 times)
  • Money in the Bank (2012)
  • Royal Rumble (2008 And 2013)
